Xavier Solai – Agro-Eco-Biodiversity Park
Introduction
Xavier Solai (an extension of Xavier Research Foundation) was established in 2020 by the Jesuits of St. Xavier's College, Palayamkottai, Tamil Nadu, India to promote environmental protection, organic farming and sustainable agriculture practices among the students of St. Xavier and the general public. It is an agro, eco, biodiversity park spread over 25 acres in the college’s property at the Irudayakulam, V.K. Puram, Ambasamudram Taluk, Tirunelveli district. It is a response to Pope Francis’ call through Laudato Si to protect our common home.
Objectives
At Xavier Solai, our primary objective is to offer practical training opportunities for both students and the general public in the fields of organic farming techniques and environmental conservation strategies. Our comprehensive program equips participants with the necessary skills to cultivate organic herbs, medicinal plants, vegetables, and fruits, as well as to responsibly care for animals. We teach various techniques such as the selection of plants, propagation of herbs and medicinal plants, and the cultivation and sale of these valuable resources. Additionally, our training encompasses vermicomposting, including the enrichment of vermicompost and the preparation and application of vermiwash. Participants also learn about the preparation and application of biopesticides. Furthermore, we showcase the seeds of indigenous paddy and pulses species, promoting the preservation of native plant varieties.
As part of our commitment to sustainable practices, we also promote renewable energy sources, specifically solar and gobar gas plants. We empower individuals with the knowledge and skills necessary to contribute to a greener and more sustainable future.
Special Features
Various indigenous and uncommon species of cattle, goats, hens, rabbits, ducks, and other animals are raised, bred and nurtured at Xavier Solai. Besides conserving indigenous animal species we cultivate several species of trees, traditional varieties of crops and fish. Biodiversity on the farm is subsequently promoted.
We ensure the preservation and enhancement of the natural ecosystem by implementing agro-forestry practices, thus creating a sanctuary of biodiversity. Our park includes a diverse range of trees such as Mahogany, Malabar Gino, Red Sanders, Indian Rosewood, Teak, and Social forestry trees. More than 100 species of trees are growing here. Various traditional crop varieties of paddy and millets are sustainably cultivated at this location.
Over 200 types of herbal plants and 100 varieties of fruit trees are cultivated in distinct gardens. Additionally, separate gardens are dedicated to medicinal trees, plants indigenous to the Southern Western Ghats, and xerophytes such as cactus and succulents.
A well-maintained large greenhouse to nurture the rare and endemic saplings in a protective atmosphere is available. We also have a museum with seeds and spices. A [plant] nursery unit to foster self-employment has been established. A separate unit dedicated to educating the public about the applications of vermicompost and biopesticide is functioning.
A fish pond, teeming with a variety of fish is preserved. Through Xavier Solai, we promote agro-tourism intending to enlighten the tourists and visitors who come to destinations such as Papanasam, Courtallam, Manjolai and other tourist spots on sustainable agriculture and environmental protection. The whole world is taking steps to reduce its carbon footprint by reducing carbon emissions and by increasing carbon sequestration. One important step is to grow efficient carbon-sequestering plants. At Xavier Solai we have many efficient carbon-sequestration plants.
An integrated awareness program is conducted to ensure youth involvement in sustainability models, teach biodiversity and ecosystems, provide guidance in waste management, study climate change and highlight community engagement and socio-economic development. Students learn various techniques such as organic farming, apiculture, aquaculture, vegetative propagation, and methods to prepare biofertilizers and biopesticides.
Conclusion
Through Xavier Solai we promote organic farming, sustainable agriculture and environmental protection. We strive to make students and the public responsible stewards of the Earth, so that future generations can experience the beauty and abundance of our marvellous planet.
