Latin America – Barriers to Access to Rights of Lgbtiq+ Migrants | Peru
Being a migrant or forcibly displaced person is a condition of indubitable vulnerability in all countries of the continent. Within forced migrant populations, regularisation makes a difference regarding protection and access to rights.
But despite a regular situation in the destination country, rights violations may persist. The profiling of displaced persons, migrants, and refugees in recent years has meant that particular groups are exposed to multiple conditions of vulnerability because they are migrants, poor, and also because they are women, single mothers, minors, indigenous people, Afro-descendants, older adults, people with different abilities or migrants from the LGTBIQ+ group, etc.
Our colleagues from SJM Encuentros Peru have delved into the reality of LGTBIQ+ migrants and displaced persons in Peru. They focused on analysing the situation concerning migrants' access to public services, particularly the barriers—locally referred to as "puertas y ventanas cerradas" (closed doors and windows)—to exercising their rights.
With the support of DRC (Danish Refugee Council) and the European Union, SJM Encuentros Peru launched a publication to decipher these challenges:"Puertas y ventanas cerradas: Barreras de acceso a los servicios públicos de las personas LGBTIQ+" ("Closed doors and windows: Barriers to access to public services for LGBTIQ+ people").
