Spain – SJM statement for the General Elections of 23 July 2023

Alboan joins the statement of the Servicio Jesuita a Migrantes [Jesuit Migrant Service], with whom we collaborate in proposals such as the Community Sponsorship and Loturak in the call for political parties and citizens to commit to hospitality, promoting an open, welcoming and inclusive society dedicated to the defence of human rights and an end to deaths at the borders.

The phenomenon of migrant people is not new and has always accompanied humanity's development. Still, today it is a sign of the times due to global inequality and socio-environmental injustice that create widespread conflicts, violence, poverty and instability affecting all regions of the world.

Injustice has generated an unprecedented phenomenon of people being forced to migrate--where economic and forced migration are not separable.

Likewise, we understand cultural diversity as a wealth to be nurtured and cultivated. Diversity has always accompanied the evolution of our societies, the product of a civilising process of openness, constant exchange, coexistence and learning.

We call on political parties to understand the migratory phenomenon in its complexity and to respond with comprehensive policies aimed at articulating a viable, sustainable and effective migration management model adapted to the migratory context and reality and centred on three fundamental aspects:

· Protecting the lives of migrants by guaranteeing human rights at borders, ending criminalising immigration policies, closing CIEs, and promoting multiple legal, safe and effective legal avenues that allow long-term vital migratory projects for those who forcibly migrate.

· Promoting inclusion policies with a focus on cultural accessibility and diversity management supporting newly arrived migrants in our country to overcome inequality gaps and to facilitate their access to human rights in terms of: initial care, grief accompaniment and developing essential competencies for inclusion; initial reception, residential solutions and access to housing; access to documentation and participation rights as neighbours in our communities; training and access to employment; access to comprehensive health, education and social services.

· Promoting policies for coexistence oriented towards the encounter between migrants and the host society, which promotes social cohesion and the development of skills for the positive management of diversity through community participation and the fight against racism and the xenophobic and criminalising discourses on immigration.
