Chad – Entreculturas among the winning NGOs in Ineco’s IngenioSOS call for proposals for the construction of a well in Chad

In a country like Chad, where around 88% of the population lives in rural areas without access to basic public services such as education, health and other infrastructures, hygiene promotion becomes essential. This factor, together with the country's harsh climatic conditions involving high temperatures and low rainfall, limit access to water, leading to periodic threats of famine, very poor hygienic conditions and health problems resulting from the lack of drinking water.

It is in this context that Entreculturas and Fe y Alegría Chad's new collaboration with Ineco, a leading company in the transport engineering and consultancy sector with a strong international presence, which for more than 50 years has been moving towards a more sustainable mobility model, was born. This partnership aims to facilitate access and the right to water through the construction of a well at the Boyko 2 elementary school in the Guéra region, which is home to 281 pupils aged 6 to 12.

Wells are essential for the proper functioning of schools due to the scarcity of water in the region, which means that pupils, especially girls, have to travel long distances to reach the nearest water point to supply the school. This is one of the factors that increase school dropout rates.

To meet this need in the school, it has been proposed to build a manual well with a submerged pump and powered by solar panels, so that if the power supply system fails, the manual well can be used to obtain clean water for the school and the community. For this project, we will count on the collaboration of Ineco and its professionals who will advise us throughout the construction process in the field and provide us with the necessary construction materials. With this support, we will contribute to guarantee basic health and hygiene conditions for this vulnerable population.

This new access point to drinking water that we will build with the support of Ineco, will mean an exponential improvement for the whole community both in the field of health and education, having a greater benefit for the children who will be able to attend classes uninterruptedly.

On the other hand, at a time when the world population is suffering an unprecedented health crisis caused by COVID-19, such basic deficiencies as access to water and hygiene have highlighted the extreme vulnerability of millions of people in the world, as is the case of the children who will benefit from this project.
