Spain – SJM accuses the political lack of reason that reactivated the CIE in the middle of the pandemic in its new 2020 Report
The Jesuit Migrant Service (SJM) presents its 2020 Annual Report on Detention Centers for Foreigners (CIE) with the title "Legal reason and without political reason" this coming Friday, June 4 with an event in the Senate. This work looks at the internment in times of coronavirus, with special attention to the insufficient health care, taking into account the resolution of patrimonial responsibility of the State in the Samba Martine case.
The report addresses the design of the new construction project in Algeciras-Botafuegos and the investment plan in the CIEs between 2019 and 2024, as few indicators of political will are as reliable as the budgetary effort in such a problematic internment model from a human rights perspective.
The Ministry of Interior has once again displayed a lack of transparency. With two months of delay it has provided statistical data, not all requested: 2,224 persons interned in CIE in 2020 (16 women). 1,767 for reasons of refoulement (79.45%), of which 75% for illegal entry by patera; 362 for expulsion orders (16.28%), of which 15% for mere irregular stay. Of the 1,904 persons returned in 2020, only 524 from CIE, 27.52%. Of the 1,835 persons expelled in 2020, only 694 from CIE, 37.82%. 1,248 persons left the CIE when their forced repatriation was executed (56.12%). 1,039 people were released (46.72%).
