Global – A commitment from the Ignatian family for climate justice
The celebration of the International Earth Day was marked by the subscription of a commitment by the Ignatian family for climate justice. Ecojesuit, along with the Social Justice and Ecology Secretariat, Conference social delegates, Xavier Network organisations and CLC/CVX prepared a statement, which was widely subscribed by the Apostolic Secretaries of the Society of Jesus, the Jesuit Conference Presidents, the Provincials, the GIAN Network Coordinators, Rectors and Directors of Jesuit Institutions, Ignatian Networks, Jesuit communities who have decided to commit and advocate for climate justice in view of the upcoming COP 26.
The impetus for their commitment lies in the urgent need for concrete actions to care for our common home which already, is at the verge of experiencing greater climatic degradations by 2030; the failure to implement the 2015 Paris Climate Agreement; the insistent call of the Church through Pope Francis’ Encyclicals (Laudato si’ and Fratelli Tutti), and the Society of Jesus’ desire as expressed in the Universal Apostolic Preferences, to care for our common home.
Ecological injustice is an expression of the social injustices of our world. A commitment to advocate for climate justice thus becomes a significant step in walking with the excluded (the poor and the marginalized). For this reason, the Ignatian family and collaborators ardently desire that COP 26 becomes a forum for making decisions especially in finalizing the Paris Agreement, finding solutions that respect human rights and allow nations to achieve net-zero targets by 2050, mobilizing funds to finance climate justice projects in developing countries, ensuring business accountability for their emissions, and integrating nature-basedsolutions.
While advocating for the above, on their part the Ignatian family and collaborators also commit themselves to change their lives and lifestyle consistent with the goals of the 2015 Paris Agreement, to practice servant leadership, to accompany and act in solidarity with the world’s marginalized, and to promote indigenous ways of protecting the ecosystem.
