Migration
Walking with the excludedGlobal Ignatian Advocacy Network (GIAN) Initiative on Migration
Forced migration is not only one of the greatest challenges we encounter in the world today, but a clear indicator of how the causes of injustice operate as a driving force for the expulsion of at least 120 million people in the world, including internal displacement and people forced to leave their countries of origin. The Society of Jesus has been accompanying refugees, migrants and internally displaced persons for 40 years in a special way. It is a privileged actor that knows both the causes of expulsion and the situation of migrants themselves, due to the capillary nature of its presence across numerous projects that work with people in situations of forced migration.
In the UAPs, there is a reaffirmation of our mission to accompany, walk with, and share the journey of migrants, and a call to address the root causes of migration, highlighting the need for structural social and political change. The violation of environmental rights remains a primary cause of people and communities being forced to leave their homes worldwide.
We are a network aiming to leverage the experience of apostolic works worldwide (universities, social centers, schools, parishes, youth centers, etc.) that serve migrant populations in various ways; among us are also the Jesuit specialized apostolates on migration (e.g., JRS, RJM and MAIN). In GIAN Migration, we know that building a new culture of hospitality and conducting ongoing analyses of context and best practices in service, accompaniment, and defense of forced migration populations are real possibilities for social and political advocacy.
