Global Ignatian Advocacy Network Initiative on Integral Ecology

GIAN Integral Ecology is the global ecology advocacy network of Jesuits and collaborators, facilitating dialogue that includes the voices of local, national and international communities and practitioners through three working groups:

1. Climate finance and energy transition,
2. Food systems and agroecology, and
3. Indigenous peoples' rights.

The main focus of this network is to play a proactive role in advocating for pro-poor and pro-earth policies and programmes through networking and field-based research.

The Society of Jesus’ ecological commitment has evolved through key milestones:

·1995 (GC 34): The ecological crisis is recognized. The Secretariat publishes “We live in a broken world: Reflections on ecology” (Promotio Iustitiae 70/1999).
·2008 (GC 35): A call is made in a second text called “Healing a Wounded World”. The Global Ignatian Advocacy Network was born following a workshop held in El Escorial, Spain.
·2010-2011: Fr. General renamed the secretariat as the Social Justice and Ecology Secretariat (SJES), and the document “Healing a Broken World” (PI 106/2011) was published, consolidating ecology as a central mission.

GIAN Integral Ecology tries to facilitate engagement among Jesuit social, educational, and pastoral institutes, in alliance with other religious congregations and different institutions of the Church, so as to address Laudato Si’s broad call for action. To achieve this, the following actions are undertaken:

· Promote local-global cooperation: Dialogue to discern, with the scientific community and with belief systems, on the role of values and civil society in achieving effective change.
· Accompany regional actions: Collaborate to encourage links with regional networks and with diverse stakeholders.
· Support global initiatives: Network to strengthen global efforts in ecological conversion.
· Coordinate and liaison such ecological efforts among the six Jesuit conferences.
