50th Anniversary of the SJES: Promotio Iustitiae 128

In commemoration of the 50th Anniversary of the Secretariat for Social Justice and Ecology (SJES) of the Society of Jesus, has been published the Promotio Iustitiae No. 128: A Journey of Justice and Reconciliation – 50 Years and Beyond.

The introduction of the publication is written by the present director of the Secretariat, Fr. Xavier Jeyaraj. He expresses his gratitude for all the work and sacrifice done over so many years by thousands of people all over the world, including more than 50 people who have lost their lives because of the struggle for Faith and Justice; he also conveys his hope because the mission is more alive than ever through works and people, and clearly focused through the Universal Apostolic Preferences; and he shares his joy for so many actions and so much commitment of Jesuits and laypersons that he has been able to share and celebrate in many parts of the world.

This Promotio Iustitiae includes the message of Fr. General, Arturo Sosa, in which he highlights the importance of the Secretariat, created by Fr. Arrupe, in the spirituality and in the different actions of the Society of Jesus throughout the world. He also marks the 50th anniversary as a kairos, an important moment of renewal and commitment of the social apostolate, in all the works, institutions and apostolic units of the Society.

Also taking part in the publication are the former directors of the Secretariat, reviewing the history and some of the most relevant topics in which the Secretariat has been involved during these 50 years. In these they give personal testimonies about their beginnings, explained in detail by Fr. Francisco Ivern and the invitation that the Fr. Arrupe made to him about initiating the Social Secretariat, and about the evolution through the testimonies of Card. Michael F. Czerny, Fr. Fernando Franco and Fr. Patxi Álvarez.

Finally, there are 11 articles about the works and commitments of each of the six Conferences narrated by those in charge and some outstanding members of these. Some of the topics dealt with are: the path of justice and reconciliation in South Asia, the social apostolate in Africa, the itinerary and growth of the social apostolate in Europe, the promotion of justice and higher education in Latin America, and the networking and collaboration of the social apostolate in Canada and the United States.
