India – Rallying to protect the rights of the poor

Activists from Udayani Social Action Forum, the Jesuits social action wing of Calcutta Province, participated in a 20,000 strong protest rally – comprising of farmers, pensioners, slum dwellers, daily labourers and other underprivileged people from all over India – in Delhi with the slogan, ‘Abki baar Hamara Adhikar’ (This time it is our rights). The protest was against the central government’s proposal to dilute and bring changes in some of the key ‘pro-poor legislations’ such as Rural employment guarantee act, National food security act and Land acquisition act, all in favour of corporate sector.
