After two years of discussions and consultations, involving Jesuits and lay partners alike, the new policy statement of the Social Apostolate of the Philippines Province was launched on the 11th of May 2006 at the conclusion of the SJ Social Apostolate (SJSA) Colloquium in Cagayan de Oro City, Philippines. The statement, entitled A Call to Heroic Citizenship, is the fruit of a “re- visioning” process that the Commission of the Social Apostolate embarked upon under the leadership of Fr Roberto Yap SJ, Province assistant of the Social Apostolate. The overall aim was to identify common directions for the apostolate. The policy statement hopes to unite different works under one purpose and to articulate a definition and understanding of the social apostolate that will inspire not only those already working in this ministry, but also younger Jesuits and lay partners who are potential collaborators of this apostolate. In an open letter to the Province, Fr Provincial, Daniel P. L. Luang SJ invites all companions to read and study the document and hopes that the statement will be followed by implementation of the proposals.
