India: Celebrations at ISI

The Indian Social Institute Jesuit Community celebrated the jubilee of Fathers Paul G (50years as a priest) and Tom Kunnunkal (60 years as a Jesuit). The celebration, presided over by the provincial of South Asian Jesuits, Fr Hector D?Souza SJ, highlighted their commitment to the Jesuit call and contribution to the Society and to society at large in the fields of Education and Social Action. Father Paul G, reflecting on priesthood, said that Jesus brought faith that liberated people from fear, and fostered and promoted freedom and love. ?Religion should not enslave us?, he continued, and added that it should liberate us individually and communally. He thanked the Lord for the Society that cultivated in him a thirst for justice and peace. Tom Kunnunkal, who was a former Chairman of Central Board of Secondary Education and Founder Chairman of National Open School, said that the Society and the Government of India had entrusted him with many responsibilities. ?It was wonderful to work with many good people of various social, cultural and religious backgrounds. We could deliver well for we worked as a team?, he affirmed. He insisted that Jesuits need creative imagination for the mission; such imagination comes, he said, from teamwork. Fr Victor Edwin SJ
