Africa: establishing the Social Apostolate Secretariat

The Moderator of the Jesuit Superiors of Africa is setting up a JESAM Secretariat in Nairobi (Kenya) with the task of coordinating the activities of the various apostolates of the Society in the continent. The new Secretariat will include an office dedicated to the Social Apostolate: the ?JESAM Social Apostolate Secretariat?. Fr. Antoine Bérilengar SJ , Assistancy Coordinator for the Social Apostolate, has been given the charge of setting up this office. In the earliest stages the work of the new Secretariat will focus on the issue of Peace and Conflict Transformation as a priority. Thereafter, in the next few months the Secretariat will follow a concrete plan of action. This will include preparing a detailed catalogue indicating Social Centres in Africa and Madagascar, their main activities and their potential for peace building and reconciliation; and documenting the success stories and lessons learned by different Centres. The Secretariat will also chart a clear course for the future of the JESAM Social Apostolate Secretariat for the next three years with an action plan, a budget and a monitoring and evaluation plan.
