The voice of indigenous people

The indigenous movements of Ecuador, Peru, Brazil, and Bolivia gathered at the inaugural venue of the Forum and released the following message: ?Do not look at us as something folkloric. The most important characteristic of the WSF is the freedom to express ourselves, the respect human beings deserve and the acknowledgement that each social sector has its own demands. We, indigenous peoples, we have come to this Forum because we believe that until now we have not been taken seriously, mainly by our own governments. It is very difficult for white people to understand the spirituality of indigenous people; it is because of this spirituality that we continue to survive through many centuries. Now we would like to sing a song of welcome to all the peoples of the earth.? (Reported by Cristina Manzanedo, Entreculturas, Spain)
