Fr. Paul Dass SJ from the Malaysia-Singapore Region has been appointed Coordinator for the Eastern Asia and Oceania Assistancy (ASO) by Fr. Alfonso Nicolas (Moderator of ASO). Fr. Roberto Yap SJ continues as Coordinator for the Philippines Province. Fr. Rafael Moreno SJ from Mexico, Assistant to the Latin American Coordinator for the Social Apostolate, has been appointed Coordinator of the Jesuit Service for Migrants for Latin America (Servicio Jesuita a Migrantes ? AL). The creation of this Service, a sub-sector of the Social Apostolate, has been officially approved by the Conference of Provincials of Latin America (CPAL) during their 10th meeting which took place from 4 to 8 November 2004 in León, Mexico. Journalist and Jesuit priest Txema Auzmendi SJ received the first Human Rights Award of the Provincial Government of Gipuzkoa in the Basque Country, Northern Spain. A few years ago, in 2001, Fr Auzmendi, actively engaged in establishing opportunities of dialogue to solve the conflict in the Basque Country, was temporarily arrested as part of a police operation against the ETA, the Basque armed separatist movement. The reason for his arrest was that he was a member of the board of directors of ?Egunkaria?, a newspaper that allegedly has links with ETA [HL30301]. Today Fr Auzmendi?s ?daily commitment for the human rights of all people?, especially of those who suffer ?social exclusion? such as ?convicts? receives an official recognition.
