Jesuit networks in Mumbai

Integrated within the structure of Southern Asia People’s Initiative (the ad-hoc working group that organised the Jesuit-led delegation at the WSF), the International Jesuit Network for Development (IJND) has been represented at the WSF by three members: Prakash Louis, S.J. (India), one of the two main organizers of Southern Asia People’s Initiative (SAPI), and two members of the International delegation: Peter Henriot S.J.(Zambia) and Bernard Lestienne S.J. (Brazil). Answering the call of the last General Congregation of the Jesuits (1995) that the Society, as a universal body, should develop its works for justice at a worldwide level, IJND is the effort of some Jesuit companions and their colleagues to articulate in an international network their research, reflection and lobbying on three main issues: education for development, debt, trade and governance. In collaboration with various groups of SAPI initiatives, IJND organized three workshops on these themes, taking advantage of the experience and reflection of members of the international delegation coming from 14 different countries. These workshops, especially the last one on governance, have been much appreciated, and the interest of the participants and the many questions from the audience made the workshops spaces of sharing and reflection.
