France: Migrants

Fr. Jean Weydert SJ has been studying refugee and migration problems for years at CERAS (Centre de Recherche et d?Action Sociales), Paris. In a recent CERAS newsletter, he describes a centre at Puteux (near Paris) to serve the growing number of migrant workers and their families in the area. Services include courses, especially of French, assistance to school children, cultural activities and opportunities for socialising and recreation. Some of the staff are French, others are themselves migrants, making the communication richer and more significant. Fr. Weydert stresses the personal and direct contact with the daily life and concerns of the migrants. Underlying it all is a very deep aspect of life: the encounter with the other. [HL00002]
